On Writing Piccola Poesie

Piccola Poesie grew out of my love for small forms—haiku, senryu, tanka, and American Sentences—and the way they capture the quiet moments that shape our days. These poems move through the seasons, exploring our relationships with each other, with nature, and with the everyday objects that anchor our lives. Writing them was an exercise in attention: noticing humor, wonder, and the tiny questions that make us pause, like what cats are really thinking or why winter pulls poets outdoors. —Constance Brewer

Poem Excerpts

HAIKU/SENRYU

still pond
a lotus blossom
blooms alone

the crabapple tree
bore small fruit
in your absence

on the calendar
my dead mother's birthday
circled in blue

TANKA

years of buttons
in a glass Ball jar
the blue one on the top
so far from the blue one
on the bottom

all around the house
grey with white trim
to blend with neighbors
out in front spring flowers
roar like thunder

AMERICAN SENTENCES

I open my eyes in dark and wait for the dark to become less dark.

New phone set to generic ringtones, I'm not really technical.

The young and beautiful things at the gym ignore my wrinkled old ass.
